How many countries are there in the world?
There are 195: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two UN observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. This map uses that list, so your percentage of the world is out of 195.
Why do some lists have more than 195 countries?
Lists differ in what they count. The ISO 3166 list of country codes has 249 entries because it includes territories such as Greenland, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong, and some travel clubs count more than 300 destinations by splitting countries into regions. This map sticks to the 195 sovereign countries so your number compares with other travellers'.
Is this visited countries map free?
Yes. It is free, with no account and nothing to install. Pick the countries you have been to and the globe, your count and your percentage update straight away. Downloading the image and the blog badge are free too.
How do I share my map of visited countries?
Tap Download my map to get an image of your map, with your countries filled in, their flags, your percentage of the world and how many continents you have been to. On a phone it opens the share sheet, so it goes straight to Instagram, WhatsApp or your photos. To send the interactive map instead, tap Copy link: the link holds your selection, so anyone who opens it sees the same map.
What size is the map image, and does it fit Instagram?
The image is 1080 by 1920 pixels, the size of an Instagram or Facebook story, a TikTok and a WhatsApp status. It uses the same design as the share cards in the VOIA app, with a world map of your countries added on top.
Can I put my visited countries map on my blog?
Yes. Under the map there is a badge with your count and your percentage of the world. Copy its code and paste it into an HTML block in your blog. It links to your map, so readers can see every country you have been to and make their own.
Is my map saved?
Your selection stays in this browser until you clear it. To keep it on every device, continue in the VOIA app for iOS or Android, where your map is saved to your profile and fills in from the trips you log.
Do territories like Puerto Rico or Hong Kong count?
This map counts the 195 countries only. The VOIA app also lets you track territories such as Puerto Rico and Hong Kong separately, so they never inflate your country count.
What counts as visiting a country?
Travellers disagree. Some only count a country after spending a night there, others count any time they left the airport. Pick a rule and apply it to every country so your number stays comparable.
VOIA Travel is available free on the App Store and Google Play.
